Smith and Nephew acquires two software technology assets from Syncera

Smith and Nephew has agreed a deal to two software assets, Virtual Backtable and TrayTouch, from the surgical software development company S2 Interactive.

These applications will enhance the service offerings provided by Syncera Value Solutions, a recently-formed Smith and Nephew business unit created to provide affordable and clinically proven products and technology solutions for the primary reconstructive hip and knee market.

Virtual Backtable and TrayTouch allow hospital and ambulatory surgery centre customers to access, analyse and manage real-time data related to instrument utilisation during surgery.

The former provides a visual map of each surgeon's preferences covering patient preparation, operating room planning and the surgical sequence, while the latter is used in the management of the central processing department that cleans, re-assembles and sterilises instrument sets.

Stuart Morris-Hipkins, senior vice-president and general manager of Syncera, said: "By organising the instrument trays and the operating room equipment based on the surgical sequence and the instrument usage of each surgeon, a hospital can significantly reduce the overall costs associated with instrument prep and assembly without sacrificing patient care.”

Smith and Nephew experienced underlying growth of three percent on a year-on-year basis during the first quarter of 2015.
