New study shows how graphene can enhance artificial muscle creation
A new study has demonstrated the ways in which graphene can be used to develop more durable artificial muscles for numerous applications.
Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology have been able to use graphene to offer an advance on ionic polymer metal composite technology, a form of electroactive polymer actuator that can change in size or shape when stimulated by an electric field.
Since cracks can form on the metal electrodes after a period of exposure to air and electric currents, the new study used a thin-film electrode, based on a novel ionic polymer-graphene composite, to offer a smooth and durable outer surface that repels water.
The new actuator demonstrated exceptional strength without apparent degradation, even under very high input voltage, and is thus expected to offer promise for use in biomedical devices, biomimetic robotics and flexible soft electronics.
As a next step, the team are planning to develop the principle further by enhancing the bending performance of the actuators, their ability to store energy and their power.
