New GMC guidelines on cosmetic procedures emphasise openness and consent

The General Medical Council (GMC) has unveiled new guidance for the cosmetic treatment sector with the aim of making procedures safer and more responsible.

New standards will be laid out detailing the expectations placed on all UK doctors who carry out cosmetic procedures, both surgical and non-surgical, as well as clarifying what patients should expect.

Key points include ensuring openness and honesty about any potential risks, as well as giving patients enough time to think about their decision and checking in to see how satisfied they are later on.

Particular care should be taken when it comes to children and young people, with the issue of informed consent a vital consideration.

Professor Terence Stephenson, chair of the GMC, said: "We are clear that doctors must not pressure patients to make rushed decisions they may end up regretting and they must give them enough information so they can make an informed choice."

The GMC is now consulting with the public and doctors on this issue and other proposals to make cosmetic procedures safer.
