New artificial leg simulates feelings of real limb

A new type of artificial leg has been developed by researchers in Austria that allows wearers to feel sensations in the foot.

Created by the University of Linz, the prosthesis incorporates sensors fitted to the sole of the artificial foot that are used to stimulate nerves at the base of the amputated stump.

Six sensors are fitted to the base of the artificial foot to measure the pressure of heel, toe and foot movement, which are relayed to a microcontroller that then triggers stimulators in close proximity to the stump.

The leg has been implanted in a 54-year-old patient who has reported improvements in mobility and quality of life since having the prosthesis fitted, as it allows him to feel the ground beneath him, reducing his risk of trips and falls.

It has also helped to reduce the phantom limb pain he has experienced following his amputation.

Professor Hubert Egger at the University of Linz said: "The sensors tell the brain there is a foot and the wearer has the impression that it rolls off the ground when he walks. All things considered, the procedure is a very simple one given the results."ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801790640-ADNFCR
