Biogen achieves carbon neutrality through sustainability projects

Biogen has announced that it has achieved carbon neutrality through its various efforts to improve its corporate sustainability.

This key environmental goal has been achieved by investing in sustainable technologies and highly efficient facilities and manufacturing processes, including energy-efficient heating and cooling, power through co-generation, and advanced distribution systems to conserve water.

It keeps more than 99 percent of its waste out of landfills by recycling, composting or burning it to create energy, while it has also worked with leading suppliers to manage their environmental impact and monitor their energy use and carbon emissions.

Additionally, money has been spent on programmes that fund wind, solar and low-impact hydroelectric power in the US, Denmark, and Switzerland, plus landfill gas projects that use naturally occurring methane gas to produce energy.

Dr George Scangos, chief executive officer of Biogen, said: "The same intellectual discipline and rigour that drives our science is reflected in our corporate citizenship. This includes improving patient access and health outcomes while strengthening our commitment to environmental sustainability, philanthropy, employee development and community improvement."

This comes after the firm was recently recognised as one of the top employers in the UK in an annual report from the Great Place to Work Institute.
