GDC launches new confidential helpline for dental professionals

6th October 2015

The General Dental Council (GDC) has announced the launch of a new helpline to make it easier for dental professionals to blow the whistle.

A confidential helpline for dental staff who may have a concern that they need to raise at work, the service allows callers to speak to an impartial adviser and receive guidance. The GDC has allied with Public Concern at Work to launch the helpline.

Registered dental professionals are obliged to put patients' interests first and act to protect them, meaning they must raise and act upon concerns if they believe patients or colleagues are at risk.

The GDC said: "Whilst there is a professional responsibility to raise concerns, taking the decision to raise a concern can be a very difficult one, for a range of reasons. Knowing who to raise your concern with can also be challenging."

It is hoped that the launch of the helpline will encourage the development of a culture of openness and honesty within the dental profession, which will ultimately serve to drive up the standard of treatment provided.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801802442-ADNFCR
