GDC failings highlighted in new report from PSA
The General Dental Council's (GDC's) recent poor performance has been put under the microscope by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
A PSA assessment of GDC whistleblowing has revealed organisational and personal failings at the top of the organisation, while accusing the regulator of both historic failures and ongoing issues with governance and oversight.
Specifically, GDC chair Bill Moyes was said to have been slow to take action on the whistleblowing report and to have failed to grasped its seriousness, while the regulatory body itself was alleged to have prevented the PSA from accessing the information needed to complete its inquiry.
Responding to the report, the British Dental Association (BDA) – a longstanding critic of the GDC – said this demonstrates the lack of control and accountability at the organisation, and called on Dr Moyes to resign.
BDA chair Mick Armstrong said: "This only further reinforces the grave concerns and the massive loss of confidence the profession has in this hugely overpriced and underachieving regulator."
