3D-printed organ model technique offers new research potential
Japanese researchers have developed a means of affordably creating 3D-printed models of human organs to provide insights into their internal structures.
Developed by the University of Tsukuba in conjunction with Dai Nippon Printing, the low-cost organ model production method makes it possible for scientists to examine complicated interior systems such as blood vessels easier to see.
With this newly developed technique, it may become possible for 3D-printed human organ models to be produced for as little as one-third of the costs possible using currently available technology.
Those involved in the project anticipate that the proliferation of the technique will result in more potential clinical site applications emerging over time.
The project is a further demonstration of the considerable potential of 3D printing technology to revolutionise the medical technology sector, with engineers exploring new ways of using the method to create affordable devices that can be specifically tailored to meet the needs of individual patients.
