Biotronik reports positive data from clinical trial of Orsiro stent

18th February 2016

Biotronik has announced new clinical data showing the effectiveness of the Orsiro hybrid drug-eluting stent in the management of heart attack patients.

Results from the BIOSCIENCE trial have been published in the journal EuroIntervention, the study showed that the Orsiro stent may have an advantage over an established device in treating ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients.

STEMI is a potentially fatal type of heart attack caused by a prolonged obstruction of blood supply in the heart. Orsiro's bioabsorbable polymer helps to address this issue by bolstering arterial healing after implantation.

Currently, there is only limited data available on the clinical performance of newer-generation drug-eluting stents in STEMI patients, with a dedicated randomised trial called BIOSTEMI to begin soon to further assess Orsiro's performance in this patient group.

Dr Alexander Uhl, vice-president of marketing for Biotronik's vascular intervention business, said: "In an effort to shed light on the superb efficacy of Orsiro in this challenging patient population, we expect to begin enrolling patients to the BIOSTEMI trial soon."ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801812904-ADNFCR
