LGA issues warning over dangers of DIY teeth-whitening kits

4th April 2016

DIY teeth-whitening kits can be potentially dangerous to health, according to the Local Government Association (LGA).

The organisation, which represents more than 370 councils in England and Wales, has issued a warning that these kits often contain bleaching agents that massively exceed the maximum legal levels.

This puts users at risk of mouth infections, blistering and burns to gums, damage to nerves and tooth enamel, and gum-shrinking. Despite this, the availability of the kits is leading to a growing number of unqualified staff carrying out the treatment, including at beauty salons.

As such, the LGA is reminding people that professional dentists are the only people legally allowed to perform teeth-whitening services, given that many of those offering these services at present are unaware that they are breaking the law.

Simon Blackburn, chair of the LGA's safer and stronger communities board, said: "People need to be made more aware of the laws and dangers on teeth whitening, with rogue practitioners given tougher sentences and larger fines."ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801815922-ADNFCR
