Brain circuit associated with binge drinking identified
US scientists have identified a circuit between two brain regions that may control alcohol binge drinking.
A team from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have shown that the extended amygdala and the ventral tegmental area – both of which have been implicated in alcohol binge drinking in the past – may form a functional circuit.
The extended amygdala responds to psychological stress and anxiety, while the ventral tegmental area regulates the rewarding properties of natural reinforcers, such as food, drink and other substances.
Studies in mice showed that inhibiting the circuit between these two brain regions protects against binge alcohol drinking, suggesting that manipulating this mechanism could help to combat this harmful habit.
Todd Thiele of UNC-Chapel Hill's College of Arts and Sciences said: "It's very important that we continue to try to identify alternative targets for treating alcohol use disorders. If you can stop somebody from binge drinking, you might prevent them from ultimately becoming alcoholics."
It is well-established that people who binge drink, especially in their teenage years, are much more likely to become alcohol-dependent, resulting in a wide range of health problems.
