BD’s Alaris System hits EMR interoperability milestone

BD has announced that more than 100 hospitals and health systems have now implemented electronic medical record (EMR) interoperability solutions for the Alaris intelligent infusion pump platform.

This milestone means that more organisations than ever before are now benefiting from bi-directional EMR interoperability with Alaris, bridging the gap between a hospital's medical records and the infusion pumps themselves.

Only one additional barcode scan is required within medication administration workflows, enabling pharmacist-verified physician orders to pre-populate the Alaris System, thereby reducing manual data input and infusion programming errors.

It also enables the wireless transfer of data from the pumps back to the EMR, including all stops, starts, pauses and titrations, further eliminating the need for manual documentation and guaranteeing maximum accuracy.

Mike Garrison, vice-president and general manager of worldwide infusion solutions for BD, said: "Our customers have typically implemented interoperability across their whole hospital, including ambulatory centres, providing an improved continuum of care for their patients."

Earlier this year, the Alaris System was named Best in KLAS for smart pumps by KLAS, an independent organisation monitoring healthcare IT performance.
