New lung scanning platform ‘offers potential for diagnostic breakthroughs’

Australian researchers have developed a new lung scanning technology platform with the potential to offer more useful insights into how the organs are functioning.

Created by a team at Monash University, the 4Dx preclinical scanner generates high-resolution images of lung tissue motion and airflow, allowing users to view and measure abnormal functioning in specific areas of the lung.

Whereas current tools require two or three pieces of diagnostic information to piece together this image, the 4Dx system is able to detect changes in lung function simply and early, meaning the effects of treatment can be assessed by comparing measurements from one scan to the next.

This will make it possible to carry out medical interventions in a timely and effective manner, thus heading off much of the potential damage caused by lung conditions.

A Monash-led research team is now carrying out trials of the technology to determine the exact benefits it can provide.

Professor Andreas Fouras, chief executive of the 4Dx business, who developed the device at Monash University, said: "Our game-changing diagnostic tool offers images of the breathing lungs, making it possible to see what is really important – not what they look like – but how they work."
