Bayer-backed joint venture Casebia Therapeutics opens new US base

Bayer has announced that Casebia Therapeutics, the new joint venture it has established alongside CRISPR Therapeutics, has opened a new US base.

The firm will utilise the site in Cambridge, Massachusetts as its primary base of research operations, with the facility spanning 33,000 sq ft of laboratory and office space, and hosting up to 80 employees.

Located in a new nine-storey MIT-owned building currently adjacent to the MIT campus in Kendall Square, the Casebia office will be co-located with CRISPR Therapeutics, with the firm to enter the new location in early 2017.

Dr Axel Bouchon, interim chief executive officer of Casebia, said: "This new location will provide us with state-of-the-art infrastructure, access to the vibrant biotech environment of the Kendall Square area, and facilitate close collaboration with CRISPR Therapeutics."

A deal to establish the joint venture was agreed in December 2015, with the aim of discovering, developing and commercialising new breakthrough therapeutics to cure blood disorders, blindness and congenital heart disease.

The name Casebia derives from the CRISPR-associated family of nuclease enzymes, which are key components of the breakthrough gene editing technology on which Casebia will base its research.
