Bayer receives NICE recommendation for Eylea

Bayer has announced that its drug Eylea has been granted a new recommendation by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

The therapy has been endorsed by the UK regulator as a cost-effective first-line treatment option for adults with visual impairment due to macular oedema secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion.

NICE's final appraisal determination reverses their provisional stance refusing to recommend the drug, with the organisation now deeming that Eylea's clinical efficacy is superior to existing first-line treatment laser photocoagulation.

The drug is already approved in the UK for the treatment of wet age-related macular degeneration and visual impairment due to macular oedema secondary to central retinal vein occlusion.

Dr Alexander Moscho, chief executive officer for Bayer in the UK and Ireland, said: "We are delighted that NICE has recognised the value of Eylea and the benefits that it can bring to patients and the clinical community."

The drug has proven to be one of Bayer's most important drivers of commercial momentum during the first half of 2016.
