Takeda announces expanded access to medicines strategy
Takeda has announced the launch of a new access to medicines strategy focused on geographies and therapy areas with the highest unmet need.
The new approach will target countries with less developed and evolving healthcare systems in areas such as Latin America, south-east Asia and Africa, which account for three-quarters of all deaths from noncommunicable diseases each year.
It will work to bring some of its most innovative medicines in the areas of oncology and specialty gastroenterology to patients in these regions, as well as vaccine candidates for communicable diseases such as dengue and chikungunya.
Additional efforts will be made to improve patient access to diabetes and hypertension medicines in sub-Saharan Africa, including accelerated registration of therapies, increased participation of local centres in clinical trials, new early access programmes and affordability initiatives.
Christophe Weber, president and chief executive officer of Takeda, said: "Access to innovative medicines and quality healthcare is vital to the health of people across the world."
This comes after the firm recently opened new offices in Nairobi, Kenya, from which it aims to forge new partnerships across Africa by adopting a not-for-profit approach.
