Medtronic study shows long-term safety performance of Micra TPS

Medtronic has announced new clinical data that demonstrates the long-term safety performance of its Micra Transcatheter Pacing System (TPS).

Findings reported at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Rome showed that the risk for major complications with the Micra TPS remained consistently low, with 96 percent of patients experiencing no major complications through 12 months of follow-up.

The Micra TPS was also shown to reduce the risk of major complications by nearly half compared to conventional systems, a trend that was reflected across all patient sub-groups, whether measured by age, sex or comorbidity.

Described as the world's smallest pacemaker, the device is less than one-tenth the size of traditional pacemakers, and is the only leadless system approved for use in both the US and Europe.

Dr John Liddicoat, senior vice-president and president of Medtronic's cardiac rhythm and heart failure division, said: "The Micra TPS has also shown a significant reduction in healthcare utilisation compared to conventional pacemakers, which is promising for clinicians looking to adopt cost-effective therapies to improve patient outcomes."

The company also reported new clinical data this week showing how its technologies can help to improve the delivery of cardiac resynchronisation therapy.
