CVS to support new equine infectious disease campaign

CVS has pledged its support for a new campaign that aims to raise equine owner awareness of the threat posed by infectious diseases.

The campaign is being organised in partnership between the Animal Health Trust, the Royal Veterinary College and the University of Nottingham, with the overall aim of improving equine health nationwide.

In the first stage of the project, 1,000 owners of horses, ponies and donkeys will be asked to complete a questionnaire, with veterinary practices to support this drive by promoting the study to clients and encouraging them to participate.

CVS runs 16 equine practices across the UK and will be promoting the survey on its websites, through social media and during open evenings held throughout September.

Veterinary surgeon Dr Caroline Hodgkinson, who is carrying out the research, said: "We hope that the results of this research study will help owners to protect their horses and to reduce the threat posed to their animals by these diseases."

It is hoped that this work will ultimately help to reduce the risk posed by infectious diseases such as strangles, influenza and equine herpes virus.
