Junior doctors’ strike plans draw criticism from medical colleagues

2nd September 2016

New plans for further industrial action by junior doctors has been met with criticism from others in the medical sector.

The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, which brings together doctors' professional bodies, issued a statement expressing its disappointment at the new wave of strikes, which have been arranged by the British Medical Association (BMA).

Having announced plans for a five-day strike from September 12th to 16th, the BMA has since confirmed further strikes on October 5th, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th, November 14th to 18th, and December 5th to 9th.

Although the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges sympathised with concerns about the new junior doctors' contract, it criticised the decision to call extended strikes at a time when the NHS is under extreme pressure.

The statement said: "We know there are genuine concerns about the contract and working arrangements, but we do not consider the proposed strikes are proportionate. Five days of strike action, particularly at such short notice, will cause real problems for patients, the service and the profession."

A similar view was put forward by the Patients Association, whose chief executive Katherine Murphy said the impact of the strikes on patients may be "catastrophic".
