Medtronic’s cardiac resynchronisation therapy shows benefits in new study

5th September 2016

Medtronic has announced new clinical data underlining the benefits of its EffectivCRT cardiac resynchronisation therapy technology.

Results from the Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Efficacy Enhancement (CRTee) study showed that the Medtronic-exclusive device-based EffectivCRT During AF algorithm improves therapy delivery in heart failure patients with atrial fibrillation.

Current CRT devices report percent pacing, a measure of whether the device sends a pacing pulse to stimulate the heart, but generally do not report the effectiveness of each pacing stimulus.

Medtronic's technology, by contrast, automatically determines the effectiveness of each left ventricular pace and adjusts pacing rates accordingly – important for those with atrial fibrillation, as the device's pulse would otherwise be more likely to be ineffective or interrupted because of an irregular heart rhythm.

As such, the EffectivCRT group in the new study saw an improvement in increased effective pacing during atrial fibrillation by seven percentage points, up from 81 percent to 88 percent.

Dr David Steinhaus, vice-president and general manager of Medtronic's heart failure business, said: "We are continually expanding our research and development to create better solutions for improved outcomes, based on individualised care in cardiac rhythm and heart failure devices."
