St Jude Medical launches new global trial of Amplatzer Amulet

St Jude Medical has announced the commencement of a new global clinical trial assessing the performance of its Amplatzer Amulet left atrial appendage occluder.

The Amplatzer Amulet IDE trial which will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the company’s device when used to close the left atrial appendage in patients diagnosed with non-valvular atrial fibrillation.

The first implant of the study has already taken place at North Mississippi Medical Center, with patients to be enrolled at up to 100 sites in the US and an additional 50 sites internationally.

Dr Mark Carlson, chief medical officer and vice-president of medical affairs at St Jude Medical, said: "The Amplatzer Amulet device, which is the current market leader among left atrial appendage occluders in Europe, was developed to provide physicians additional treatment options to improve patient care."

The device works by blocking the left atrial appendage at its opening, minimising the opportunity for blood clots to form that then migrate into the bloodstream. It is built with a longer lobe and waist than the previous version of the technology and is designed to allow for easier and more stable placement, resulting in shorter procedure times for patients.
