GlaxoSmithKline study shows efficacy of shingles vaccine Shingrix

GlaxoSmithKline has announced results from a new phase III clinical trial demonstrating the efficacy of Shingrix, its investigational shingles vaccine.

Detailed data from the ZOE-70 has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine, showing that Shingrix delivered a 90 percent efficacy rate in adults aged 70 years and older, with performance maintained for at least four years.

This aligns with the results announced from the earlier ZOE-50 study, which assessed the vaccine's performance among people over the age of 50 and demonstrated a 97 percent efficacy rate.

Meanwhile, a pooled analysis of data from the two studies showed that the vaccine effectively reduced the risk of subsequent chronic neuropathic pain, also known as postherpetic neuralgia, which is the most common and severe complications of shingles.

The company expects to begin seeking regulatory approval for Shingrix later this year based on this positive data.

Dr Emmanuel Hanon, senior vice-president for vaccines research and development at GlaxoSmithKline, said: "If approved, this candidate vaccine could be an important tool for the prevention of shingles and the pain associated with it, which would significantly impact the health and quality of life of so many people."
