BVA joins campaign to end rabies by 2030

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has pledged its support to a campaign that aims to end human deaths from canine-mediated rabies by 2030.

To mark World Rabies Day on September 28th, the organisation has joined the global End Rabies Now campaign, which is led by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control. It seeks to raise the profile of rabies as a global neglected tropical disease, while publicising the work being done to control and eliminate the disease.

Currently, rabies causes tens of thousands of human deaths each year, with almost all cases occurring as a result of a bite from by an infected dog. Around half of all dog bites and rabies deaths occur in children under the age of 15.

There is a strong scientific basis to suggest that vaccinating dogs can play a fundamental role in disrupting the cycle of rabies transmission to humans and cease its spread in the 120 countries still affected by canine rabies.

BVA president Gudrun Ravetz said: "BVA is proud to support the End Rabies Now campaign and help get those key messages out to policymakers and governments worldwide – every rabies death is entirely preventable and we can end rabies by 2030 through vaccinating dogs."
