Bayer’s Eylea receives NICE recommendation in new indication

29th September 2016

Bayer has announced that its drug Eylea has been recommended for NHS use in a new indication by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

A final recommendation from the regulator has approved the anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy for the treatment of visual impairment due to macular oedema secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO).

Eylea is being endorsed as an alternative to laser photocoagulation, the current first-line treatment for the NHS, based on clinical trial data showing it can provide superior improvements in vision.

NICE has also signed off on the cost-effectiveness of the therapy, meaning that more than 13,000 NHS patients with BRVO will now have access to Eylea as a first-line treatment in England and Wales over the next three months.

Dr Alexander Moscho, chief executive officer of Bayer in the UK and Ireland, said: "This treatment continues to achieve positive results in real-life clinical practice, similar to that demonstrated in clinical trials, and we hope that this will continue for patients with macular oedema secondary to BRVO."

Eylea is also recommended for use in the UK as a treatment for wet age-related macular degeneration, central retinal vein occlusion, diabetic macular oedema and myopic choroidal neovascularisation.
