Celgene reports positive long-term safety data for Otezla

Celgene has announced new clinical data that demonstrates the long-term safety performance of Otezla, its oral selective inhibitor of phosphodiesterase 4.

Findings from ongoing clinical trials of the drug have been presented at the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology's annual congress in Vienna, including analyses of pooled 156-week safety data from the ESTEEM 1 and 2 and PALACE 1-3 trials.

These studies assessed the safety performance of the drug among patients with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis, in the case of the ESTEEM trials, or for active psoriatic arthritis in the case of PALACE. Subjects with psoriatic arthritis were treated with Otezla alone or in combination with disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs including methotrexate.

The findings showed no increase in the incidence of adverse events associated with Otezla, as well as no new safety signals and improved tolerability with exposure up to 156 weeks. Meanwhile, the rates of major adverse cardiovascular events, malignancies and serious infections were comparable to placebo up to 16 weeks and remained low with prolonged exposure.
