L’Oreal allies with Poietis on hair bioprinting project

4th October 2016

L'Oreal has announced a new collaboration with Poietis that aims to devise a means of bioprinting a hair follicle, the small organ that produces hair.

Poietis, a biotechnology company that develops biological human tissues for research and regenerative medical purposes, will be contributing its laser-assisted bioprinting technology for this project, while L'Oreal will offer its unique expertise in hair biology.

Using Poietis' technology, it is possible to produce biological tissue that can position cells in 3D with extremely high cellular resolution and viability. The procedure involves layering micro-drops of bioinks using a quick scan by a laser beam, with the tissue then being matured for around three weeks before it can be used in tests.

Ultimately, it is hoped that it will be possible to generate new advances in the scientific understanding of hair, while enabling exclusive efficacy testing using bioprinted hair samples.

Jose Cotovio, director of the predictive methods and models department at L'Oreal Recherche and Innovation division, said: "For L'Oreal, the combination of our respective areas of expertise opens up the possibility of previously unheard-of achievements in the field of hair."
