GlaxoSmithKline’s Nucala shown to reduce asthma hospitalisation in new study
GlaxoSmithKline has announced new clinical trial data showing how its drug Nucala can help reduce hospitalisation rates among severe asthma patients.
A meta-analysis published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology has shown that the risk of hospitalisations or emergency room visits caused by asthma attacks was halved in severe asthma patients with an eosinophilic phenotype who received Nucala, when compared to placebo.
Data on 1,388 patients was drawn from across four randomised placebo-controlled clinical trials, ranging from 24 to 52 weeks in duration, including the pivotal phase III MENSA trial.
All patients included in the meta-analysis had frequent exacerbations and were already receiving the standard of care, including high-dose inhaled steroids plus at least one additional controller medicine.
These new findings highlight the fact that this mepolizumab therapy can play an important role in reducing major events such as hospitalisations and visits to the emergency room in severe asthma patients.
Steve Yancey, medicines development lead for mepolizumab at GlaxoSmithKline, said: "Reducing the risk of an asthma attack, which is so severe it requires hospital intervention, is a crucial aspect of asthma management."
