Thermo Fisher Scientific launches new six-dye forensic kit

Thermo Fisher Scientific has announced the launch of the first six-dye forensic kit specifically customised for European database requirements.

The Applied Biosystems NGM Detect PCR Amplification Kit helps forensic analysts to maximise recovery of DNA information from degraded samples, allowing profiles that can be uploaded into European DNA databases to be produced.

Its use of six-dye chemistry helps to minimise the size of discriminating markers such as SE33, while it provides a complementary configuration to the well-established Applied Biosystems NGM SElect PCR Amplification Kit format for dual amplification purposes.

The kit has been trialled by more than ten European forensic laboratories to date, showing superior sensitivity compared to equivalent products thanks to its optimised master mix formulation and the ability to add up to 15 microlitres of sample to the PCR reaction.

Other key attributes include a Y-Indel for gender confirmation, an internal PCR control and a total amplification time of under an hour.

Lisa Calandro, product management leader for human identification for Thermo Fisher Scientific, said: "There are a significant number of cases that sometimes are difficult to resolve due to substandard quality samples. This poses a challenge to the forensic community; the introduction of the NGM Detect kit will enable laboratories to overcome this hurdle."
