Quality of England’s dental care verified by CQC report

The latest Care Quality Commission (CQC) State of Care report has demonstrated the high quality of care England's dentists are currently providing.

It was shown that 90 percent of dental practices inspected in 2015-16 complied with the regulator's five key tests of being safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. This meant dental services came top out of all the sectors assessed in terms of providing high-quality care.

More specifically, 100 percent of inspected practices met the tests for being caring, meaning they unanimously treated patients with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect, while 99 percent were found to be responsive to patients' needs and preferences and effective in achieving good health outcomes.

Of all the practices surveyed, 86 percent achieved a rating of good or outstanding in terms of care quality, compared with 70 percent for the other three core community services assessed. Dentistry's patient safety performance was similarly strong.

The findings have been welcomed by the British Dental Association (BDA) as evidence of the high standards the sector has been able to maintain, despite challenging circumstances.

Mick Armstrong, chair of the BDA, said: "All dentists can be proud that we are defining ourselves as a caring and responsive service. This shows the commitment we have to our patients, and to our ideals of professionalism and responsibility."
