Public Health England appoints new head of communications

Public Health England has announced the appointment of Lee Bailey as its new director of communications.

Mr Bailey takes on the role having been serving as acting director of communications at the Department of Health since July. Prior to this, he worked as head of news at the department, a post he assumed in May 2014.

Other roles formerly occupied by Mr Bailey include those of associate director of communications at NHS England, director of communications at the Department for Education, and head of news at the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

A government statement said: "The director of communications is responsible for building and maintaining Public Health England's reputation as a trusted and expert source of authoritative evidence-based public health advice, information and leadership."

Mr Bailey has been appointed as the successor to Lis Birrane, who retired in April this year, with PRWeek reporting that he is likely to be working closely with Public Health England's long-term comms partner Freud Communications.

The agency has worked with the government body on several flagship campaigns, including Stoptober and Change4Life.
