Sanofi Pasteur announces new Zika vaccine research collaboration

Sanofi Pasteur has announced a new collaborative project that aims to develop an effective vaccine to protect against the Zika virus.

The company is working with the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation's immunobiological technology institute, known as Bio-Manguinhos or Fiocruz, and the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) on this project.

This follows the signing of a cooperative research and development agreement between WRAIR and Sanofi Pasteur this summer to create a new Zika vaccine using WRAIR's inactivated-virus vaccine technology.

Fiocruz's activities will complement this work, providing additional expertise and increasing the likelihood of successfully producing a safe and effective Zika vaccine as quickly as possible.

Areas of collaboration with Fiocruz could include process development, vaccine characterisation, epidemiological studies, pre-clinical and clinical evaluation of the vaccine, and clinical assay optimisation.

Dr John Shiver, vice-president for research and development at Sanofi Pasteur, said: "We have a common goal of developing a vaccine to prevent this emerging disease threat imposed by the Zika virus."
