Teva launches reformulated generic levothyroxine in UK

1st November 2016

Teva has announced the launch of a new reformulated version of generic levothyroxine in the UK.

The product is intended for use in the control of hypothyroidism, a condition characterised by an underactive thyroid. This includes congenital hypothyroidism in infants, acquired hypothyroidism in children and juvenile myxedema.

Levothyroxine is available in a range of strengths and pack sizes, with the 12.5 mcg and 75 mcg strengths exclusive to Teva. It is also lactose and galactose-free, meaning it is suitable for patients who are intolerant to these sugars.

Underactive thyroid is a condition that affects around 15 in every 1,000 women in the UK, as well as one in 1,000 men.

Bruno Barcelos, senior director for generics at Teva UK, said: "The addition of the exclusive strengths helps deliver on our commitment to addressing unmet patient needs, and we hope it makes a positive impact on the lives of patients living with underactive thyroid issues."

The company was recently named as the UK's best generics company at the Pharmacy Business Awards for the 14th year in succession.
