Current NHS structure ‘causing confusion for staff’

The way the NHS is currently structured is causing confusion for staff who want a closer integration between health and social care services, according to a new report.

PwC conducted a survey of more than 1,000 NHS staff and over 2,000 members of the public in England, finding that 70 percent of English NHS workers do not understand the role of the national bodies in the current healthcare system.

Moreover, 71 percent of NHS staff said they want to see the system reformed, with 66 percent frustrated by the division between health and social care, which they believe is bad for patients.

To address these concerns, the report calls for the government to clarify the roles of the various national bodies, while moving to a more devolved system where local areas are given greater accountability and responsibility.

David Morris, PwC partner and author of the report, said: "It is essential that this debate does not fall to the bottom of the pile and I hope this report is a welcome addition to the discussion and helps point to some much-needed solutions to the growing problems the NHS faces."
