New report highlights low rate of vegetable consumption in children

7th November 2016

A new report has raised concerns about the low levels of vegetable consumption among UK children.

The Food Foundation research has indicated that one-quarter of secondary school-age children eat less than one portion of vegetables a day, despite the latest government guidance suggesting people should be eating about seven portions of fruit and veg daily.

Assuming half of this intake should be made up by vegetables, it means that only one in 20 teenagers are eating more than the recommended 3.5 portions a day. Additionally, more than one-third of the vegetables they do eat is highly processed, with pizza and baked beans comprising 17 percent of their veg intake.

The report also raised concerns that the UK is highly dependent on imports to provide residents with the vegetables they need to stay healthy, meaning these foods are now susceptible to price hikes due to the plunging value of the pound.

Anna Taylor, executive director of the Food Foundation, said: "The combination of higher food prices and pressure on UK horticulture production, in a situation where our children are already eating much too little veg, threatens to make our children's diets even worse than they already are."
