GDC introduces new case examiners for fitness to practise investigations

The General Dental Council (GDC) has announced the introduction of new case examiners to its fitness to practise process.

The 14 examiners, who include a mix of clinical and lay members, have been tasked with carrying out decision-making functions currently performed by the GDC's investigating committee, allowing conclusions to be reached more quickly and efficiently.

Case examiners will be able to agree undertakings with practitioners in relevant cases, which can happen far earlier in the investigation to allow these professionals to avoid lengthy and stressful practice committee hearings. 

Working in pairs, they will decide whether to issue a warning, offer an agreement, or take no further action and close the case. Only when there is a realistic prospect of the dental practitioner's fitness to practise being impaired will the case be referred to one of the three GDC practice committees.

Jonathan Green, director of fitness to practise cases at the GDC, said: "Introducing case examiners will benefit patients, the public and dental professionals, and improve the efficiency of the GDC's fitness to practise process."

The British Dental Association has described the move as a "step in the right direction", provided that the promised savings and improved decision-making are delivered.
