Johnson and Johnson challenge to create consumer health solutions for Africa

Johnson and Johnson has announced the launch of a new innovation challenge that aims to develop consumer health solutions for people in Africa.

The Africa Innovation Challenge will support the continent's growing innovation ecosystem to help develop important and locally sustainable consumer health solutions, encouraging novel ideas focusing on three critical health areas.

Efforts will be made to develop solutions for promoting early child development and maternal health, empowering young women and improving family wellbeing, with the best solutions receiving up to $100,000 (80,150 pounds) in funding and mentorship from scientists, engineers and researchers from Johnson and Johnson.

Winners could also receive dedicated space at a lab facility in Africa throughout the development of their product or service, dependent on the needs of the solution submission. Award recipients will be announced in February 2017.

Dr Paul Stoffels, executive vice-president and chief scientific officer at Johnson and Johnson, said: "We have the opportunity to support the continent's top entrepreneurs through mentorship and other resources, and by working together with local talent, to bring forward new solutions to local healthcare challenges."
