Janssen reports positive rheumatoid arthritis data for sirukumab

18th November 2016

Janssen has announced the results of two clinical trials showing the effectiveness of sirukumab in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

The pivotal phase III studies evaluating subcutaneous sirukumab, a human anti-interleukin-6 monoclonal antibody, showed the benefits the developmental therapy can offer in the treatment of adults with moderate to severely active rheumatoid arthritis.

Data from the Janssen-sponsored SIRROUND-H study showed how patients receiving sirukumab monotherapy demonstrated significantly greater improvement in disease activity levels compared to an established alternative.

Meanwhile, results from a second study, SIRROUND-T, showed that patients refractory to or intolerant to one or more anti-TNF therapy receiving sirukumab demonstrated significant improvements in the signs and symptoms of active rheumatoid arthritis.

Dr Newman Yeilding, head of immunology development for Janssen Research and Development, said: "We look forward to continuing to work with global health authorities on the applications that have been submitted."

Sirukumab is currently being evaluated by health regulators in Europe, the US and Japan.
