Thermo Fisher Scientific launches HeliScan MicroCT imaging system
Thermo Fisher Scientific has announced the launch of its new HeliScan MicroCT multi-scale imaging system.
The new system is designed to help scientists analyse the relationships between a material's structure at the microscopic level and its bulk properties by taking large-scale, high-fidelity 3D images of samples.
Users can take a MicroCT scan using the HeliScan system before progressing to higher-resolution imaging with a device such as a Helios plasma-focused ion DualBeam, or to atomic-scale analysis using a transmission electron microscope such as a Titan system.
Its non-destructive analysis can preserve the specimen for further investigation with other techniques, while the helical scanning technology, iterative reconstruction technique and wide cone-angle X-ray illumination offer fast, high-resolution results with a low noise ratio.
HeliScan can be applied to a variety of types and sizes of samples, including polymers, carbon, metals and manufactured parts, as well as life science samples such as bone, tissue, plants and insects.
Trisha Rice, vice-president and general manager for materials science solutions at Thermo Fisher Scientific, said: "Ultimately, this technology is designed to provide high-quality results – giving materials scientists insight into the internal structure of large, dense samples without the need for stitching, which can degrade the quality of the image and results."
