Mouth cancer rates see significant jump in UK

A new report has shed light on a significant rise in the number of people in the UK being diagnosed with mouth cancer.

Analysis from Cancer Research UK has indicated that rates of oral cancer have jumped by 68 percent in the UK over the last 20 years, increasing from eight to 13 cases per 100,000 people.

For men under 50, the rate has risen by 67 percent in 20 years, with a 59 percent increase for those aged 50 and over. Meanwhile, for women of all ages, the rise was 71 percent, although the condition remains more common in men.

The report showed that around nine in ten cases of the disease can be linked to lifestyle and other risk factors, with smoking is the biggest avoidable factor, linked to an estimated 65 percent of cases.

Other potential contributors to be aware of include alcohol, diets low in fruit and vegetables, and human papillomavirus infections.

Jessica Kirby, Cancer Research UK's senior health information manager, said: "It's worrying that oral cancer has become more common. It's important to get to know your body and what's normal for you, to help spot the disease as early as possible."
