Novo Nordisk reports positive cardiovascular outcomes data for Tresiba

30th November 2016

Novo Nordisk has announced the results of a new clinical trial demonstrating the strong cardiovascular safety performance of its diabetes therapy Tresiba.

Headline results from the DEVOTE trial, which involved more than 7,500 people with type 2 diabetes, showed that Tresiba was non-inferior in terms of heart health to insulin glargine U100 when added to standard of care.

In the trial, type 2 diabetes patients at a high risk of major adverse cardiovascular events – including cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction or stroke – were treated for a period of approximately two years.

Tresiba patients experienced 27 percent fewer episodes of severe hypoglycaemia, resulting in a 40 percent overall reduction of total episodes of adjudicated severe hypoglycaemia overall.

Mads Krogsgaard Thomsen, executive vice-president and chief science officer of Novo Nordisk, said: "The DEVOTE results further strengthen the potential of Tresiba to become the new standard of care within basal insulin therapy."

Detailed results from the DEVOTE trial will be presented at a forthcoming scientific, with the findings to be submitted for review with regulatory authorities during the first half of 2017.
