New figures show large proportion of UK HIV cases are undiagnosed

New figures from Public Health England have shed light on the significant proportion of people with HIV in the UK who are unaware of their condition.

According to data released to coincide with World AIDS Day, around 101,200 people are living with HIV in the UK. Of these, more than 13,500 cases are undiagnosed, putting them at risk of poorer health outcomes and unwitting transmission of the disease.

Of those diagnosed with the condition, 96 percent are receiving treatment, with 94 percent of those being treated having undetectable virus levels, meaning they pose very little risk of passing the virus on to sexual partners.

A total of 6,095 people were diagnosed with HIV in 2015, with 39 percent of diagnoses coming at a late stage of the infection, thus increasing their chances of dying prematurely.

The HIV epidemic still remains largely concentrated among gay and bisexual men, but it was emphasised that anyone can acquire HIV regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, sexuality or religion.

Dr Valerie Delpech, head of HIV surveillance at Public Health England, said: "It is essential that health services are aware of the prevalence of HIV in their local area and the potential demand for HIV testing."
