Atlantis Healthcare highlights role of health psychology in improving adherence
Atlantis Healthcare's clinical strategy director has called on healthcare companies to enhance their understanding of health psychology in order to improve adherence among patients.
In a new thought leadership piece for PMLiVE, Clare Moloney has drawn attention to the range of different factors that contribute to treatment non-adherence – a key problem that can undermine therapeutic effectiveness.
For example, many do not understand their treatment requirements or cannot adapt to lifestyle changes, while others have difficulty accessing treatment. Concerns over stigmatisation or unrealistic expectations can also play a part.
As such, health psychology interventions can play a vital role in helping companies to understand exactly why certain patients do not stick to their prescriptions, as well as the factors that contribute to greater levels of success.
A number of tools, devices and digital technologies are now available to assist with this, making it easier for people to self-manage their health by offering advice or reminders when necessary.
Ms Moloney said: "A multichannel approach to patient support is critical in order to resonate with different target populations and patient preference."
