Benefits of new ultrasound system with 3D-printed lenses demonstrated

Researchers have developed a new type of ultrasound system that uses 3D-printed lenses to deliver better results.

By using bespoke resin lenses that have been 3D printed, complex lens shapes can be made to allow ultrasound waves to be focused at multiple sites, or directed to specific targets.

Current ultrasound machines rely on standardised cylindrical or spherical lenses, restricting the clarity and precision of the images by comparison. Clearer images give doctors and surgeons greater control and precision when performing diagnoses and surgeries.

The new technology was developed by Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, which is now in talks with various industry and healthcare partners to potentially develop prototypes for medical and research applications.

Study leader Claus-Dieter Ohl, associate professor at the school of physical and mathematical sciences at Nanyang Technological University, said: "In most medical surgeries, precision and non-invasive diagnosis methods are crucial. This novel device not only determines the focus of the wave but also its shape, granting greater accuracy and control to medical practitioners."

The technology could be used for more accurate medical procedures that use ultrasound to kill tumours, loosen blood clots and deliver drugs into targeted cells.
