Bayer and Janssen report lower healthcare costs associated with Xarelto

Bayer and Janssen have announced new clinical data showing that cancer patients treated with their drug Xarelto generally have lower overall healthcare costs.

A new analysis has revealed that people with cancer treated for blood clots with the rivaroxaban-based anticoagulant therapy had significantly fewer emergency room visits and lower healthcare costs at initiation of therapy compared to those given standard treatment.

After one year, 18 percent of people who were prescribed Xarelto were managed by a simple telephone call, typically after a recent outpatient visit, with the resulting cost savings mainly due to the reduction in emergency care visits.

Dr Gerald Soff, chief of the haematology service at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, said: "Standard therapy for cancer-associated blood clots is burdensome for patients who endure daily painful injections. It also incurs considerable costs for healthcare systems throughout the entire treatment process."

Blood clots are the second leading cause of death in people with cancer, with the risk of venous thromboembolisms in people with cancer shown to be up to five times higher than in people the same age without cancer.
