New report highlights significant mental health burden on London children

16th December 2016

A new report from Public Health England has highlighted the considerable burden that mental health issues are placing on children in London.

More than 110,000 children in the UK capital are suffering from significant mental ill health, or around one in ten children. Around 40,000 suffer with anxiety, with more than 10,000 experiencing depression and just under 19,000 children are diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Meanwhile, more than 68,000 children were shown to have some form of conduct disorder. The study also showed that only 25 percent of children across the country who need treatment for mental ill health are currently receiving it.

In response to these figures, Public Health England has announced plans to work with the Healthy London Partnership to reduce suicide and improve children and young people's mental health care.

This will include developing a London-wide vision and approach to enhancing health outcomes, while also working to improve care for children and young people experiencing mental health crises.

Dr Marilena Korkodilos, a paediatrician and child health lead for Public Health England London, said: "We are working with the city's leaders and the NHS to develop a citywide vision and approach to help make London the world's healthiest city."
