Sanofi and Boehringer Ingelheim confirm business exchange

4th January 2017

Sanofi and Boehringer Ingelheim have confirmed they have completed a successful business exchange of Sanofi's animal health division Merial and Boehringer Ingelheim's consumer healthcare branch.

The swap began with negotiations in December 2015 and the strategic transaction was signed in June 2016, but the deal was finalised in time for the first day of the new year 2017.

Chairman of the board of managing directors of Boehringer Ingelheim Hubertus von Baumbach called the deal "a mutually beneficial agreement implemented in the spirit of a shared vision".

"The combined strength of the two organizations will improve Boehringer Ingelheim's competitiveness in the animal health business segment that is so strategically important to our company," he added.

Merial is a leading provider of health products and vaccines for a wide range of farm and domestic animals and is used veterinarians, stock breeders, poultry producers and pet owners worldwide.

It has nine research and development centres across the globe and its Frontline brand has become the market leader in flea and tick control, while its Ivomec became the single most successful animal health product ever launched.
