Roche’s Perjeta wins NICE approval

Roche has achieved approval from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for its drug Perjeta (pertuzumab), which treats human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)?positive breast cancer.
 
Final approval was given by the organisation after Roche agreed a confidential price discount to increase its cost-effective for the NHS and the recommendation is based on the condition that this discount will apply under the patient access scheme.
 
It means routine access to Perjeta will be available for up to 1,400 people a year in England and Wales, although the drug will not be available in Scotland.
 
Perjeta can be used in conjunction with Herceptin (trastuzumab) and chemotherapy for treatment in adults who have HER2-positive, locally advanced, inflammatory or early-stage breast cancer at high risk of recurrence.
 
Between 15 and 25 percent of women with breast cancer have HER2-positive cancers and they tend to grow more quickly than those that are HER2-negative.
 
They are typically fought with targeted or biological therapies, with Herceptin currently being the one most commonly used by healthcare providers.
