Gilead Sciences has announced the appointment of Alessandro Riva as its new senior vice-president and head of its haematology and oncology therapeutic areas.

Dr Riva joins Gilead from Novartis Oncology, where he served as head of global oncology development, playing a key role in the creation of more than 20 cancer compounds, including several targeted and immune-oncology therapies.

The expert has authored or co-authored more than 100 oncology research manuscripts and abstracts during his career and will now take charge of haematology and oncology programmes at Novartis.

Dr John McHutchison, executive vice-president for clinical research at Gilead Sciences, said: "His leadership and proven track record developing therapies across the spectrum of haematological malignancies and solid tumours will be instrumental as we continue to grow and advance our pipeline of novel therapeutics for people living with cancer."
