New study shows slow progress on digitisation of NHS records

There has been limited progress made on the digitisation of NHS patient records in the last 25 years, according to a new study.

Health scientists at the University of York have carried out a review addressing the progress of electronic record implementation in NHS secondary care organisations, looking at policy documents and evaluations of policy since 1992.

It was concluded that lacking guidance on IT implementation and an underestimation of the level of change to the working lives of staff members have proven to be recurrent obstacles to the process of achieving a fully digitised NHS.

Confusion over how policy ambitions would be funded was also cited as an issue, as well as a lack of clarity over whether this process would be managed at a local or national level.

Dr Arabella Scantlebury, research fellow at the university's department of health sciences, said: "Hospitals need to make informed decisions about introducing new systems, but guidance, underpinned by research into the pros and cons of such systems, is lacking."
