Boots UK to pilot pneumonia vaccination service for over-50s
Boots UK has announced the launch of a new pilot pneumonia vaccination service offering immunisation to people over the age of 50.
With the NHS offering jabs to those aged 65 and over or with a long-term health condition, this new service from Boots will provide another vaccination option for older people, who are generally at higher risk of developing the disease compared to their younger counterparts.
It is estimated that over-50s are 40 percent more likely to get pneumonia than those in their 40s, which is a particularly serious issue given that the UK currently has one of the highest mortality rates from pneumonia in Europe.
Boots UK's service has already been piloted in 26 stores and is now being rolled out to an additional 25 stores across England and Wales, costing 70 pounds for those wishing to benefit.
Richard Bradley, pharmacy director at Boots UK, said: "By offering this pneumonia service, we both complement the vaccination that is available on the NHS and also boost a patient's overall protection against pneumonia."
Data from the British Lung Foundation shows that pneumonia affects around one in 25 UK adults each year, rising in prevalence during the colder autumn and winter months.
